What are Solenoid Valves?

Wattmizer Solenoid ValvesSolenoid valves transform power into a magnetic force that opens and closes valves efficiently. Our direct-acting solenoid valves are ideal for smaller flow rates. Use them with a wide variety of neutral media, including gases, water, synthetic oils, and other materials. Standard solenoid valves, including air, water, and gas are available in inlet port sizes from 10-32 UNF to 3/8" and capacity up to 1200 psi. The bodies, seals, and coil types are constructed from materials designed to handle even the toughest media and the most extreme operating environments.

Solenoid Solutions, the most responsive valve manufacturer on the planet, designs and manufactures solenoid valves that offer appropriate flow and direction over long-term performance. We develop the solutions that more manufacturers depend on-from medical and dental, energy and gas appliances, to transportation and process industries. We specialize in innovative designs, precision manufacturing, and a driven response to customer requirements.

Solenoid Solutions offers miniature, subminiature, high capacity and low wattage or low power solenoid valves. Below are descriptions and diagrams of 2-way and 3-way operating valves.

How Solenoid Valves Operate

Solenoid valves control the flow of fluids, air, gases and other media in many types of systems and products. Each valve is in turn controlled by an electric current that passes through the solenoid. These electromechanically operated valves come in a broad range of configurations and materials suitable for countless applications.

We offer valves that feature two or more ports to help more industrial applications accomplish more tasks. For example, 2-way valves feature one inlet and one outlet port and a single orifice, while 3-way valves feature three port connections and two valve orifices. At Solenoid Solutions, our extensive product line includes miniature, subminiature, high-capacity and low-wattage solenoid valves.

Two-Way Normally Closed Solenoid Valve
Two-Way Normally Open Solenoid Valve

In 2-way normally-closed electric solenoid valves, the pressure flow from one port to the other is blocked until the power is turned on and the valve becomes energized. Powering on then allows the media to flow freely through the valve. Alternatively, in 2-way normally-open valves, pressure flows from one port to the other when the power is off and the valve is de-energized. Switch on the normally-open solenoid valve and flow ceases.

Three-Way Solenoid Valve

A 3-way solenoid valve has three pipe connections and 2 orifices, one of which is always open, allowing for two paths of flow. The 2-position operation makes these solenoid valves useful for applying or cutting off flow or pressure in a tool or equipment component, such as a hydraulic cylinder. There are four common types of 3-way solenoid valves: 3-way normally-closed, 3-way normally-open, 3-way directional control and 3-way multi purpose.

How to Select Solenoid Valves

In determining the best valves for your application, begin by considering the type of media that will flow through the valve, as well as the operating environment in which the valve will be used. You will also need to consider body-size requirements, port size, voltage and operating pressure. Use our online charts, Terminology page and informative buyer's guide for reference.
