• Adapter:
    Hex shaped plated steel or stainless steel part designed to attach the stop port on 2-way normally open and 3-way valves to a piping system using NPT threads. See literature for connection size.
  • Ambient Temperature:
    Temperature of the media surrounding external surfaces of a valve.
  • Ampere Rating:
    Current drain when the valve is energized.
  • Bubble Tight:
    Sealing capability within the valve which is virtually undectectable during a pressure decay test time period. Approximately equal to 1X10-5 cc/sec using air.
  • Burst Pressure:
    The pressure differential between internal and external surfaces of a valve which will cause the pressure containing parts to rupture resulting in an external leak.
  • Cv Factor:
    A dimensionless coefficient or value which indicates relative flow capacity of a valve, defined as the gallons of water per minute (USGPM) at 60° F, which will flow through the valve at a one (1) PSIG pressure drop.
  • Coil Insulation Class Rating:
    Coil magnet wire insulation rating. Exceeding this rating causes premature coil failure.
    Class B: 130° C (266° F)
    Class F: 155° C (311° F)
    Class H: 180° C (356° F)
  • Coil Voltage:
    Voltage at which the coil must be energized if the valve is to perform as stated in the specifications. Normally, the coil voltage tolerance is +10% to -15% of rated coil voltage.
  • Continuous Duty:
    Coils rated for continuous duty are designed to be energized continuously without overheating or failure. All Solenoid Solutions Inc. standard valves are equipped with coils rated for continuous duty.
  • De-energized:
    No power applied to the coil. Typically, this is the "fail-safe" condition. A normally closed valve is closed when the coil is de-energized.
  • Differential Pressure (delta P):
    Pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of a valve.
    Examples:
    100 PSIG Inlet Pressure, 50 PSIG Outlet Pressure, Differential Pressure = 50 PSIG

    120 PSIG Inlet Pressure, Atmospheric (0 PSIG) Outlet Pressure, Differential Pressure = 120 PSIG

    50 PSIG Inlet Pressure, Vacuum Outlet, Differential Pressure = 65 PSIG (Assumes perfect vacuum)

    Atmospheric (0 PSIG) Inlet Pressure, Vacuum Outlet, Differential Pressure = 15 PSIG (Assumes perfect vacuum)
  • Direct Acting:
    In direct acting solenoid valves, the solenoid plunger directly opens or closes the orifice when the coil is energized or de-energized.
  • Directional Control:
    Type of valve whose function is to divert a flow of media from one inlet line to one of two outlet lines.
  • Duty Cycle:
    The ratio of "on" time to "total cycle" time. If a valve is on for 2 seconds and off for 8 seconds, the total cycle time is 10 seconds and the duty cycle is 20%.
  • Energized:
    Power applied to the solenoid valve coil causing the valve to change state. A normally closed valve will open when energized.
  • Filter:
    A device whose primary function is to remove contaminants from the flowing media. Solenoid Solutions Inc. recommends that a filter be placed directly before its solenoid valves.
  • Free Vent:
    Term referring to a 3-way normally closed valve that exhausts to atmosphere when de-energized. Used for air and inert gas applications only. Use the line connect stop adapter design for liquids.
  • Housing (or Strap Housing):
    A functional enclosure designed to protect the coil and provide a magnetic flux path.
  • Intermittent Duty:
    Rating given to special high-power coils used where continuous duty service is not required.
  • Leakage:
    All Solenoid Solutions Inc. standard valves are designed to be "bubble tight."
  • Maximum Operating Differential Pressure (MOPD):
    The maximum pressure differential (PSIG) between the inlet and outlet of a valve at which the solenoid valve coil can reliably operate the valve.
  • Maximum Operating Voltage:
    Nominal rated coil voltage PLUS 10%.
  • Media:
    The gas or liquid flowing through the valve.
  • Minimum Operating Voltage (MOV):
    Nominal rated coil voltage MINUS 15%. All Solenoid Solutions Inc. standard valves are designed to operate at the Maximum Operating Pressure Differential (MOPD) when the Minimum Operating Voltage (MOV) is applied.
  • Multi Purpose:
    A 3-way valve designed to have pressure applied at any port.
  • Normally Closed:
    A normally closed valve is closed when de-energized, preventing flow. When energized, the valve opens allowing flow.
  • Normally Open:
    A normally open valve is open when de-energized allowing flow. When energized, the valve closes preventing flow.
  • Orifice:
    Controlled opening within the valve which is opened or closed to control media flow.
  • Plunger:
    The moving element within a solenoid valve assembly that opens or closes the orifice when the coil is energized or de-energized.
  • Porting:
    The openings in the valve body and/or stop for attaching external media piping.
  • Quiet Operating:
    Term used for a valve design that utilizes a soft "bumper" on the valve plunger to eliminate the metallic "click" associated with the metal plunger contacting the metal stop.
  • Rectified Coil:
    A coil design that changes an applied AC voltage to an operating DC voltage. Unique circuitry permits the quietness of DC operation and pressure ratings, in most cases, as high as AC valves.
  • Response Time:
    The time required for a solenoid valve to completely change state, i.e. form closed to open, or vise-versa. Normally 10-50 milliseconds depending upon operating conditions.
  • Shading Ring:
    A ring of copper or silver used in the "stop" area of an AC valve to act as a mini rectifier, preventing AC buzz.
  • Stop:
    Upper pole piece in the solenoid valve magnetic circuit. When the coil is energized the magnetic field causes the plunger to be "pulled-up" against the stop.
  • Universal/Multi-Purpose:

  • Vacuum:
    A negative pressure.
