What are Solenoid Valves?
They are electromechanically operated valves, controlled by an electric current running through a solenoid. Solenoids work as an electromagnet when energized, moving a plunger inside the valve, causing it to open or close. The operation can be 'normally closed' (NC), where the valve stays shut until energized, or 'normally open' (NO), where it stays open until energized.
Two-Way Solenoid Valves in the Beverage Industry
Two-way solenoid valves are the most basic type of solenoid valves, comprising two ports: an inlet and an outlet. When the solenoid coil is energized, the valve opens, allowing flow from the inlet to the outlet. When the coil is de-energized, the valve closes, stopping the flow.
In beverage dispensing, these valves are commonly used for on/off control of water or other beverage ingredients.
For instance, in a coffee machine, a two-way solenoid valve can control the flow of water from the reservoir to the brewing unit. When the user initiates the brew cycle, the valve's coil is energized, opening the valve and allowing water to flow. When the cycle is complete, the coil is de-energized, closing the valve and stopping the flow.
In large-scale beverage manufacturing plants, two-way solenoid valves are used for more complex operations. They can control the flow of various liquid ingredients into a mixing tank, ensuring precise volumes are combined to create a consistent product. They can also control the flow of cleaning fluids during system sanitization, essential for maintaining hygiene standards.
Three-Way Solenoid Valves in the Beverage Industry
Three-way solenoid valves offer more functionality than their two-way counterparts. These valves have three ports and two orifices, allowing them to control more complex flow paths. They are ideal for applications that require the switching of flow between two outlets.
A common use of three-way solenoid valves is in draft beer dispensers. These valves are used to control the flow of beer and gas (typically CO2 or nitrogen) to the tap. When the tap is opened, the solenoid valve opens the beer line while simultaneously closing the gas line. When the tap is closed, the beer line is closed, and the gas line is opened to maintain pressure in the keg and prevent the beer from going flat.
Three-way valves are vital in soda vendiing machines. When a selection is made, the appropriate syrup is directed to the spout by one path in the valve while carbonated water is directed by another. The mixing occurs at the nozzle, producing the desired soda.
In bottling operations, three-way solenoid valves can be used to control the filling process. These valves can switch between filling and venting modes, allowing bottles to be filled and then immediately vented to prevent overflow or spillage.
